Sea-Going Service

  • Second mate (foreign going)
  • 18 months as officer in charge of navigation watch

B.Tech Marine Engineering

To be eligible for a B.Tech in Marine Engineering, you must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognized board.
Eligibility criteria
You must meet the age limit
You must be medically fit and meet the physical standards of the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000
You must have a minimum aggregate score in PCM in 12th std
Age limit
The age limit may vary by institution and course
For example, at College, the age limit for males is 25 years for general category, 28 years for OBC (NCL), and 30 years for SC/ST
Relaxations
SC/ST candidates may receive a 5% relaxation in PCM eligibility marks
English marks
Lateral entry
You may be eligible for lateral entry into the second year of the B.Tech program if you have a 3-year Engineering Diploma in Marine/Mechanical/Electrical/Electrical & Electronics

B.SC (Nautical Science)-(3Years)

Eligibility: (a) Pass in 12 th Standard examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%. (b) The candidate must have secured minimum 50% marks in English language in 10th or 12th standard exam (As per DGS Norms).

Relaxation of 5% in English marks will be applicable to candidates who are native of the Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and belong to their Scheduled Tribes and who & both of whose parents were born in those islands & belong to the Scheduled Tribes of those islands. For SC/ST candidates: There will be a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks of PCM; however, it will not apply to English Marks.

Eligibility Criteria for ETO

For BE/B.Tech Degree Holders:-

Education:
Must have a BE / B.Tech degree in Electrical, Electronics, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunication/Communication, or Electronics and Instrumentation with at least 50% aggregate marks in degree.

English Proficiency:
Need at least 50% in English in either 10th or 12th grade. If not, you must have 50% aggregate in your degree exam, provided the degree was taught in English.

For Diploma to BE/B.Tech (Lateral Entry) Candidates:

Education:
Entered BE/B.Tech in the 2nd year through lateral entry after completing a Diploma in the relevant fields with 50% aggregate mark .

English Proficiency:
Need at least 50% in English in 10th grade. If not, you must have 60% aggregate in your Diploma or 50% aggregate in your degree, provided the course was taught in English.

For Diploma Holders:

Education:
Must have a 3-year Diploma in the relevant fields with at least 60% aggregate marks.

English Proficiency:
Need at least 50% in English in 10th grade. If not, you must have 60% aggregate in your Diploma, provided the course was taught in English.

Other Requirements:
Must have completed 10th and 12th from a recognized board.

The degree must be recognized by the government or AICTE.

AGE LIMIT:

Maximum 35 years of age at the time of commencement of the course.

 

Graduate Marine Engineering – Career Path
  • 1 year Presea Training
  • Exempted from appearing in MEO CLASS IV PART A examination
  • Six months duly documented sea service as assistant marine engineer officer in charge of an engineering watch
  • Completion of advanced safety training courses AFF, PSCRB, MFA and three months preparatory course (optional) to obtain marine engineering officer class iv certificate of competency – appear for MEO CL-IV PART ‘B’ MMD examination – obtain MEO CL-IV certifcate of competency
  • 12 months approved sea service as MEO CL-IV engineering officer in charge of an engineering watch
  • 4 months training course – appear MMD examination MEO CL-II PART B – obtain CLASS II marine engineering officer certificate of competency ( DME to appear for PART A)
  • 18 months approved sea service as MEO CL – II officer in charge of an engineering watch
  • 2 months engineering management training course – obtain CLASS I marine engineering officer certificate of competency
  • Promoted to chief engineering officer
Eligibility Criteria for Diploma Nautical Science(DNS)

The one Year DNS Course is a course leading to B.Sc., Nautical Science after 18 months of sea service and also leading to 2nd Mate Foreign going Certificate of competency awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, enabling the cadets to become Navigating officers on board Merchant Naval Ships anywhere in the world. The one year Diploma in Nautical Science Course is strictly residential.

Course Duration: 1 year

Age Limit: Maximum 25 years

Physical Standards: Medically fit as per the standards set by M.S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000.

Academic Qualification: Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% and with 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th std exam.

Eyesight: Candidates have to qualify a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should be free from colour blindness.

Career Progression:

Phase 1: 1 year dns course at Academy.

Phase 2: 18 month sea training at ship.

Phase 3: Appear for 2nd mate exams + bsc.

Phase 4: Join as a 3rd officer and get promoted to 2nd officer.
